DescriptionLarge salt-glazed stoneware storage jar, ten-gallon capacity: light gray color, with some beige spotting; tall cylindrical shape, two robust pulled handles applied near top; two incised lines delineate neck area; overhanging rounded rim; deep brown Albany-slip interior; combination of freehand and stencilled cobalt-slip decoration: brushed numeral near base, surrounded by a ring of dots; very large and extensive stencilled label features roses, daisies, and leaves, and provides maker information.Dimensions20.75 x 12.5 in. Historical NotesJames and William "Leet" Hamilton moved from Beaver County to Greensboro, Greene County, Pennsylvania, c.1850. For seven years, they worked together as "Jas. Hamilton & Co.". In 1857, Leet broke away, and started his own stoneware business, until about 1865. In 1866, Leet sold his firm to his son, Frank, and son-in-law, John Jones; early on, this pottery was known as the "Union Pottery" and then "Star Pottery", and finally, simply "Hamilton and Jones"; this concern remained in business until 1897. Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
