DescriptionStoneware wax-sealer or canning jar; tall cylindrical shape, tapered inward at neck, delineated with incised bands; flaring upper rim, interior of which is formed into a recessed flange, to accept a sealing lid or cap (not intact); pale orange-red body clay has fired to a dark grey/tan, with a heavily pebbled or textured glossy salt glaze; bold cobalt stencilling has maker information; dark-brown albany-slip coating inside; large kiln furniture scars on base.Dimensions8.25 x 5 in. Historical NotesAlexander Donaghho moved his pottery from Fredericktown, Pennsylvania, to Parkersburg, West Virginia. in 1870; the firm's official name was Donaghho & Sons, sometimes referred to as "Excelsior Pottery." Alexander Donaghho was born in Washington County in 1829, and died in 1906. Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
