DescriptionSalt-glazed stoneware stoarge jar, six-gallon capacity: tall, wide, cylindrical shape, walls nearly straight-sided; two attached extruded(?) handles at shoulder; narrow rim bolster, defined by an embossed ring; reddish-tan body color has fired to a dark gray-brown; cobalt-slip decoration is a combination of freehand brushwork and stencilling: straight and wavy lines, numeral with dashes at base; tall vertical stencil with maker name, with large, fancy ampersand, a scroll, and then place of manufacture; glossy reddish-brown albany-slip coated interior; slightly concave base is largely unglazed, indicating stacking on a similiar-sized vessel in the kiln.Dimensions14.5 x 12.5 in. Historical NotesThomas F. Reppert amd William Williams founded their pottery in Greensboro, Pennsylvania, in 1880, occupying the old James Hamilton factory. In 1884, Reppert bought out Williams, and continued operations on his own, closing in 1895. Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
