DescriptionSmall one-quart(?) size fruit or canning jar: light gray color, very smooth, straight-sided cylindrical shape; two decorative incised lines near top; straight rim with formed interior flange to accept a wax-sealed canning lid or cap (not intact); light-brown Albany-slip coated inside; handwritten pencil(?) inscription on base with fruit name; pale blue stencilling provides maker information.Dimensions6.5 x 4.375 in. (16.5 x 11.1 cm)

Historical NotesSmall fruit jar made by Hamilton & Jones Pottery, Greensboro, Pennsylvania. The partnership of Frank Hamilton and John Jones began in 1866; the firm was also known as "Union Pottery" and "Star Pottery"; the company failed to re-open following a fire in 1897. Handwritten "Tomatoes" on base indicates home-canning usage. Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
