DescriptionStorage jar, approximately one-gallon capacity; relatively tall, narrow shape, with pinched neck, delineated by an incised double ring; rounded rim at top; light-gray body has a curious pattern of vertical indentations, as if the clay had been combed during shaping; broad brushed cobalt-slip bands at top and bottom, and stencilled lettering with retailer information; dark-brown Albany-slip interior; slightly concave base is largely un-glazed.Dimensions10 x 6 in. Historical NotesMade for Pittsburgh grocer John Welty, this crock was probably made by a Southwestern Pennsylvania pottery, possibly James Hamilton & Co. of Greensboro, PA (1851-1880). Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
