DescriptionOne-gallon stoneware storage jar, imprinted with the label of a Pittsburgh merchant: short, wide, somewhat ovoid shape, wide, flat, overhanging upper rim; two incised rings or bands at shoulder; light gray to tan color, with a combination of brushed and stencilled cobalt slip decoration: at top, a vine or swag morif, with multiple repeating leaves; below this, a wavy line and the stencilled label with retailer information, framed by freehand dashes and lines; brown albany-slip interior; most of base is unglazed, revealing a pale-orange color clay body.Dimensions8.5 x 7 in. Historical NotesSamuel Cooper, a downtown Pittsburgh merchant, is known to have purchased stoneware articles from the James Hamilton pottery, located in the Monongahela River town of Greensboro, Greene County, Pennsylvania; his address, "no.7 Diamond" street, is on present-day Forbes Avenue. Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
