DescriptionStorage jar or crock, six-gallon size, orange terracotta-color clay has fired to an olive-gray color, under a salt glaze; wide, straight-sided form; two arc-shaped extruded(?) handles near rim; wide and heavy rolled-over rim; brown albany glazed interrior; combination of freehand and stencilled cobalt-slip decoration; brushed straight and wavy lines, sharply-cut stencil with maker information; below this, a freehand numeral, flanked by three wavy lines, one side of which appears to have been smudged before firing; somewhat concave base is largely unglazed.Dimensions14.5 x 13.25 in. (36.8 x 33.7 cm)
MarksCombination of freehand and stencilled cobalt-slip decoration: sharply-cut stencil reads: "Williams & CoucH" / NEW GENEVA / PA."; below this, a freehand "6".
Historical NotesThis short-lived New Geneva, Pennsylvania pottery partnership may have lasted only a year or so, circa 1888. Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
