DescriptionSalt-glazed stoneware wax-sealer or canning jar: medium to dark-gray color, very broad base, tapering gradually to a slightly overhanging rim, the inside of which has been formed into a flange, to accept a wax-sealed lid or cap (not intact); the face of the jar is decorated with a combination of free-hand cobalt-slip lines, centered by a stencilled emblem of a Federal sheild, surrounded by a wreath, which appears to have been applied upside-down; dark brown albany-slip interior; base shows unglazed circle, indicating that this jar was probabaly stacked on top of a similiar-sized vessel in the kiln.Dimensions9.5 x 6.625 in. (24.1 x 16.8 cm)Historical NotesThough unmarked, this jar has a curiously applied patriotic shield design, which may suggest production during or shortly following the Civil War. Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
