DescriptionSalt-glazed stoneware jug, approximately half-gallon capacity: light-gray color, w/ thick, glossy, salt glaze; small c-shaped handle attached at shoulder; short, straight neck, delineated by incised lines; bright-blue cobalt slip decoration, stencilled with retailer name, below two brushed horizontal lines.Dimensions9.5 x 6.25 in. Historical NotesStoneware merchant jug, likely made by a Southwestern Pennsylvania pottery; similiar to a small whiskey jug in form, this vessel may have been used to dispense vinegar, etc. Wilkinsburg was formally incorporated as a borough in 1887, having been named Sterret Township in 1871; prior to this, the "village" was annexed to the City of Pittsburgh. Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
