DescriptionStoneware whiskey jug, appears to be three-gallon capacity; light gray color, with very thick salt glaze; very robust roundish shape, large and heavy applied handle at shoulder; incised lines at top, with scribed or incised numeral; short, straight thick spout; stenicilled on front in pale-blue cobalt slip is maker information.Dimensions15 x 9 x 9.25 in. (38.1 x 22.9 x 23.5 cm)

Historical NotesPhilip and Nicolas Eiler are listed as potters in 1850s census records. From 1857 to 1862, Philip Eiler and Henry Sunshine made pottery as "Eiler and Sunshine". After 1863, Philip Eiler was again working alone. After 1873, East Bimingham became part of the city of Pittsburgh, and Eiler's stencilling reflected this change, "P. Eiler / Pittsburgh." Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
