DescriptionVery large, heavy stoneware jug, bulky and primitive-looking; tall, ovoid, shape, yellow-buff color, salt glaze, Albany slip interior; short neck, with relatively large mouth opening; pulled, attached handle joins to neck ring and shoulder of vessel; very bold brushed tulip-flower decoration in cobalt blue slip, with cursive numeral at shoulder.Dimensions14.5 x 8 in. Historical NotesColor seems unusual for Southwestern Pennsylvania. Handle attachment resembles some Johnstown-area potters work. Bold flower design also suggests Northwestern Pennsylvania, possibly Beaver County, production. Early appearance, likely pre-Civil War manufacture.
