DescriptionSalt-glazed stoneware whiskey jug. Two-gallon capacity. Light gray color. Tall body, tapered at shoulder to a short neck or spout, delineated by an embossed ring. Applied handle appears to have been partly moulded. Cobalt blue-slip decoration features a combination of stencilling and free-hand brush-work including a wavy line at top, then an arched emblem stencilled with maker information including name and location; at base, a freehand capacity numeral with underline and a pair of short flanking lines.DimensionsHeight x Width x Depth: 14 × 8.625 × 9.5 in. MarksCobalt blue-slip arched emblem stencilled: "JOHN McCULLOUGH. / WHOLESALE & RETAIL / LIQUOR DEALER / 3(?) 23 LIBERTY STREET / PITTSBURGH. PA" ; at base, a freehand "2" with underline.
Historical NotesProbably made by a Greensboro, PA or New Geneva, PA pottery, this whiskey jug bears the label of John McCullough, a liquor dealership located on Liberty Street in downtown Pittsburgh. Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
