DescriptionSalt-glazed stoneware whiskey jug, three-gallon capacity: tall, bulbous shape, swells outward somewhat towards the rounded shoulder; wide and heavy pulled handle; short, straight spout or neck, delineated by three embossed rings; extensive cobalt-stencilled design features tulips, leaves, and a central rose, and has maker information and numeral; free-hand brushed line at base; wavy line at shoulder above stencilling, and arched band above handles; base is largely unglazed.Dimensions16.5 x 9.5 x 9 in. Historical NotesFounded in 1866, by Frank Hamilton (son of William "Leet" Hamilton) and John Jones (who married Leet's daughter, Mary Ann Hamilton); the company operated until 1897. The firm was also known as "Star Pottery", and in its earliest days as the "Union Pottery" (union of Hamilton & Jones); the highest quality products were produced in the period 1866-1872. Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
