DescriptionLarge stoneware crock, five-gallon capacity; hand-thrown exterior displays a pattern of diagonal tool marks; pale orange-color body clay, with thin salt glaze, much of which has been burned away, leaving only light-gray blotching; two applied lift handles near top, with decorative incised line; overhanging rim at mouth has been beveled; deep cobalt-blue brushed-on decoration, showing a cursive numeral over a peculiar but elaborate floral(?) design; brown Albany slip coating on inside of vessel; base is slightly concave.Dimensions13.25 x 11.25 in. Historical NotesUnusual form and decoration. Vessel appears to be relatively early, but may not be a Western Pennsylvania product.
