DescriptionSalt-glazed stoneware storage jar, three-gallon capacity; tall, cylindrical shape, bulging outward slightly at the shoulder; two attached pulled handles, accented with cobalt slip at bases; salt glazed interior, top of rim is unglazed; pronounced undercut bolster at rim; cobalt stencilled at center is maker information with ribbon device; also considerable brush-work decoration: wavy lines, broad lines, dashes, and X's; two large glaze drips show that the vessel was inverted in the kiln.Dimensions14.5 x 8.75 x 8.5 in. Cursive numeral "3"; also has impressed "3" near top rim.
Historical NotesIssac Hewitt operated a pottery in the Monongahela River town of Rice's Landing from 1868 to 1885. Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
