DescriptionSalt-glazed stoneware storage jar, grye color, five-gallon capacity; straight-sided cylindrical shape, pulled in somewhat at the shoulder, with two applied handles; sharply defined overhanging rim, delineated by incised lines; combination of freehand and stencilled cobalt decoration: at the base, a hand-brushed numeral, with dashes; above this, a stencilled emblem of crossed roses and buds, flanked by two stars, and the maker information; at top, brush-applied multi-leaved vines and wavy lines.Dimensions15.75 x 9.75 x 9.5 in. Historical NotesIn 1866, William "Leet" Hamilton sold his pottery to his son, Frank, and John Jones (who had married Leet's daughter Mary Ann Hamilton); this pottery, known at the beginning as "Union Pottery", was also known at times as "Star Pottery"; Hamilton & Jones operated until the pottery was destroyed by fire in 1897. Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
