DescriptionGAR badge. The topmost portion of the medal is centered around the image of a set of buildings and smokestacks at a steel factory. Surrounding the image is an elliptical border, with a laurel branch to the left, and an olive branch to the right. Above the central image is a border of stylized flourishes city name and year. Below this top portion is a scarlet ribbon, which is in turn attached to the second portion of the medal. Text describing the wearer is written in a stylized script, and is surrounded by a scalloped shell and a series of curving flourishes and dots. Hanging from this section is the third part of the medal; it is round, with rank and date information written across an outer band. Within the band is the three-quarter profile of an older gentleman with a mustache in a suit and tie. His name is written to the left and right of the gentleman's head. The reverse side of the bottom-most section contains the image of a monument with two seated soldiers and a third, standing female figure. The monument sits in front of a cemetery and fields. The word "DELEGATE" is written in a stylized script.

Bottom medal has text "DEPARTMENT COMMANDER / 1896-1897" written across an outer band.

The name "ALFRED / DARTE" is written to the left and right of the gentleman's head.

The reverse side of the bottom medal has text along the outer rim of the medal "31ST ANNUAL ENCAMPMENT / DEPT. OF PA. G.A.R."

Historical NotesPart of a collection relating to the Pennsylvania Grand Army of the Republic and John Remley who served in the Civil War and was active in the leadership of the GAR. The collection documents the military career of a Civil War soldier from the Western Pennsylvania region.
