DescriptionGAR badge. The top portion of the medal depicts a boat scene, in which five figures are rowing, one is standing in the front holding a flag, and one is standing in the rear. Underneath the boat is a commemorative date. Underneath this scene is the city name across an unfurled banner. An image of an early car separates a year from the dates. The bottom portion of the medal hangs directly under the car image. It is centered around a seal depicting two soldiers, flanked by flags on either side, shaking hands over a seated woman and standing child, with a third figure standing in the center of the background. Surrounding the seal is the name of the organization and military service information. The seal is placed over two crossed flags, and is headed by an eagle with it's wings outspread. Under the seal is event information. The inscription is divided by an intertwined organizational acronym. There are two types of pins on the back of the medal.Dimensions1.25 x 2.25 in. (3.2 x 5.7 cm)
InscriptionsUnderneath the boat is the inscription "JULY 24 1701".

Underneath this scene is the word "DETROIT" across an unfurled banner.

An image of an early car separates the number "1914", and also "AUG. 31 / SEPT. 5".

Surrounding the GAR seal is the inscription "GRAND ARM OF THE REPUBLIC / 1861 - VETERAN - 1866".

Under the seal is the inscription "48TH NATIONAL / ENCAMPMENT". The inscription is divided by an intertwined "G" "A" "R".
MarksEmbossed text on the back of the lower section "P.....CO. / CHICAGO".
Historical NotesPart of a collection relating to the Pennsylvania Grand Army of the Republic and John Remley who served in the Civil War and was active in the leadership of the GAR. The collection documents the military career of a Civil War soldier from the Western Pennsylvania region.
