DescriptionGAR souvenir badge is made up of two sections. The upper section has a stylized shape, surrounded by flourishes along the edges. within the section is an inscription about Illinois. The second section of the medal is attached to the first by an arched bar that has text that describes the object. Below this bar is an upside-down star decorated with a piece of pressed aluminum. The decoration is divided into three different images. The one in the center is of Abraham Lincoln standing in front of a chair. The second and third images are of men on horses, and flank the first in circles. All three sections have stylized borders. Below the star is an unfurled banner that is inscribed with event information. The reverse side of the first section of the medal is inscribed with the maker's mark directly under the pin. The reverse of the second section has patent and object fabrication information. Another inscription in script is located directly under the certification and includes GAR Commander's name.Dimensions1.75 x 2.625 in. (4.4 x 6.7 cm)
InscriptionsThe upper section has the inscription "ON THE RECORDS OF OUR YEARS / ABRA'M LINCOLN'S NAME APPEARS / GRANT AND LOGAN AND OUR TEARS / ILLINOIS - ILLINOIS".

The second section of the medal is attached to the first by an arched bar that states "OFFICIAL / SOUVENIR".

At the bottom is an unfurled banner that is inscribed "CHICAGO / ENCAMPMENT / G.A.R. 1900".

Another inscription in script is located directly under the certification: "...... / Albert D. Shaw" / "COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF / G.A.R."


MarksThe reverse side of the first section of the medal is inscribed with the maker's mark directly under the pin "S.D. CHILDS & CO." "MAKERS.CHICAGO".

The reverse of the second section reads "PAT. APL'D FOR" / "THIS IS TO CERTIFY THAT / THIS BADGE IS MADE FROM / CAPTURED CANNON".
Historical NotesPart of a collection relating to the Pennsylvania Grand Army of the Republic and John Remley who served in the Civil War and was active in the leadership of the GAR. The collection documents the military career of a Civil War soldier from the Western Pennsylvania region.
