DescriptionMedal is round on the top and bottom, with flat sides. The top has a squared-off protrusion with an opening. Across the top of the banner, the city name is written across a banner. Directly under the banner is the image of a steamboat on the river. The bottom two-thirds of the medal is split into multiple different images. The left-hand half of that portion is taken up by the seal of the City of Pittsburgh. The center of the seal contains an image of a fort overtop of the shield containing three medallions and a checked band. The seal is flanked by leaves. The right-hand side of the lower portion of the medal is occupied by three main images. The first, that of a train engine, is toward the bottom center of the medal. Behind the train is an image of a factory with smokestacks within a circle. Behind the factory image are more smokestacks. The reverse side of the medal is smooth, with the maker's mark in the center.Dimensions1.437 x 1.625 in. The reverse side of the medal has text in the center "BASTIAN BROS. CO. / ROCHESTER N.Y." written in circle with seal with "M.P.B. / P.I.U." within.
Historical NotesPart of a collection relating to the Pennsylvania Grand Army of the Republic and John Remley who served in the Civil War and was active in the leadership of the GAR. The collection documents the military career of a Civil War soldier from the Western Pennsylvania region.
