DescriptionAbstractly shaped collage made from construction paper and pastel. The base is an abstract piece of black construction paper, with a rectangular piece of green paper adhered to the proper left upper corner. The upper edge of the green piece of paper is rounded and there is magenta and blue pastel at the halfway point. An abstract piece of light brown paper is adhered to the proper right upper corner of the black paper. A narrow strip of gray paper runs diagonally from the proper right upper corner to the lower proper left corner of the black paper. a section of tan paper is adhered to the proper left lower corner and magenta and blue pastel is applied to the center of the black paper. There is evidence on the reverse that this object was once adhered to another object.Dimensions3.7795 x 2.874 in. (9.6 x 7.3 cm)Historical NotesArtwork by the Pittsburgh artist Samuel Rosenberg. Artist and teacher Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) had a prolific career in Pittsburgh, leading him to be called the “Dean of Pittsburgh painters.” He is perhaps best-known for his scenes of the Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s. Rosenberg was a beloved presence in the Pittsburgh art world and influenced numerous artists through his teaching careers at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, Young Men & Women’s Hebrew Association, and Carnegie Tech.
