DescriptionA rectangular collage with uneven edges. The base layer is made up of text and images, including a female head in the upper proper right corner (with a piece of purple paper over the forehead), the Red Cross symbol on the proper right bottom corner, and an "Esquire" magazine cover on the proper left edge. A drawn grid is present throughout the object. The center of the object is a piece of red paper in an abstract shape. A second piece of red paper is adhered over the first and is roughly outlined with light purple pastel. A rotated (clockwise) black pastel "D" is on the upper proper left section of the large red paper, while abstract figures in blackk, blue, peach, and white pastel are in the lower section of the large red paper. Tan pieces of paper are present along each edge of the object, and a black piece of paper is adhered to the lower proper left corner of the object. Artist and teacher Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) had a prolific career in Pittsburgh, leading him to be called the “Dean of Pittsburgh painters.” He is perhaps best-known for his scenes of the Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s. Rosenberg was a beloved presence in the Pittsburgh art world and influenced numerous artists through his teaching careers at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, Young Men & Women’s Hebrew Association, and Carnegie Tech.
