Painting on front of paper is painted in watercolors. There is blue watercolor spread into the corners and around the edges. In the upper left corner, there is a purple and red crescent shape with a large black splotch along the bottom. The crescent is around an orange, red, purple splotch which is connected to a yellow blob with a magenta oil pastel triangle in the bottom. In the lower left corner, there is a series of purple, blue, and black lines overlapping. Reverse has pencil sketches of what appear to be eyes and other abstract shapes.Dimensions8.687 x 5.758 in. Artist and teacher Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) had a prolific career in Pittsburgh, leading him to be called the “Dean of Pittsburgh painters.” He is perhaps best-known for his scenes of the Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s. Rosenberg was a beloved presence in the Pittsburgh art world and influenced numerous artists through his teaching careers at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, Young Men & Women’s Hebrew Association, and Carnegie Tech.
