DescriptionRectangular abstract collage with uneven edges. The collage base is a magazine clipping with layers of tissue paper, pastel, watercolor paint, and black ink overtop. The watercolor pigments are: yellow, white, and green. The proper left upper corner has layers of white tissue paper outlined with yellow and green watercolor paint. There is another layering of white tissue paper in the proper right lower corner, which is underlayed with a green, yellow, and orange design (possible from the magazine base). A third layering of white tissue paper is in the center/proper right section. A large section of black ink makes up the majority of the lower half of the composition, with a smaller section of black in in the proper right upper quadrant of the composition. The reverse is an advertisement for Old Grand-Dad bourbon.Dimensions6.496 x 8.0315 in. (16.5 x 20.4 cm)

Historical NotesArtwork by the Pittsburgh artist Samuel Rosenberg. Artist and teacher Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) had a prolific career in Pittsburgh, leading him to be called the “Dean of Pittsburgh painters.” He is perhaps best-known for his scenes of the Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s. Rosenberg was a beloved presence in the Pittsburgh art world and influenced numerous artists through his teaching careers at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, Young Men & Women’s Hebrew Association, and Carnegie Tech.
