DescriptionRectangular multi-media collage. The base is sketchbook paper and the upper edge shows evidence of being torn from a spiral binding. There is discoloration on the lower proper right edge of the base. The layers are made up of magazine cuttings, construction paper, watercolor paints (yellow, blue, and red), acrylic paints (green, yellow, blue, red, and blue-green [teal]), and crayon (magenta). The upper proper right corner is a piece of bmack magazine cutting with blue acrylic paint, the upper proper left corner is a teal and brown magazine clipping. The lower proper right corner is a black magazine cutting with red and white acrylic paint, the lower proper left corner is a green magazine cutting with brown, yellow, and green acrylic paints. The center of the object is a piece of textured paper with watercolor paints saturating it. To its proper left is a piece of gray construction paper with magenta crayon and red watercolor paint. The center of the upper quarter of the object is a piece of purple construction paper that has white watercolor paint (gouache) that is mixed with glitter.Dimensions11.9685 x 9.0945 in. Historical NotesArtwork by the Pittsburgh artist Samuel Rosenberg. Artist and teacher Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) had a prolific career in Pittsburgh, leading him to be called the “Dean of Pittsburgh painters.” He is perhaps best-known for his scenes of the Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s. Rosenberg was a beloved presence in the Pittsburgh art world and influenced numerous artists through his teaching careers at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, Young Men & Women’s Hebrew Association, and Carnegie Tech.
