DescriptionSalt-glazed stoneware storage jar, one-and-a-half-gallon capacity: light grey color with thick pebbled glaze; body of vesse bulges outward slightly at the waist, with very plain undercut rim at mouth; dark brown albany-slip interior; stencilled in a diluted cobalt slip with retailer information; hand-applied capacity numerals below.Dimensions9.25 x 7.25 x 7.25 in. (23.5 x 18.4 x 18.4 cm)
MarksStencilled in a diluted cobalt slip with "MILLS & CO. / DEALERS IN STONEWARE &C (?) / numeral (?) 5(?) 8(?) LIBERTY ST. PITTS."; hand-applied "1 1/2" (?) below; text is difficult to read.
Historical NotesThis rather plain crock bears the name of Mills & Company, a Liberty Street merchant; the heavy mottling of the glaze makes the address nearly illegible Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
