DescriptionStoneware butter churn with lid and dasher. Salt-glazed stoneware butter churn: reddish-orange body clay has fired to a reddish-olive-gray color; tall, cylindrical form, exterior shows numerous grooves associated with turning; two applied handles at shoulder, with thin, sharp, profile edge; slightly flaring neck, delineated by incised lines; face is stencilled with cobalt-blue capacity and maker information; internal shelf to fit lid and dasher. Lid: slightly oblong pine disc, with central hole, edge is turned to drop into jar. Dasher: wooden dowel, with cross-shaped agitator fitted onto the bottom end; this has been repaired at some point with nails and screws.Dimensions18 x 9 in. (45.7 x 22.9 cm)Marks(a)

Historical NotesAlexander P. Donaghho moved from Fredericktown, Pennsylvania to Parkersburg, West Virignia in 1870. The official name of the concern was "Donaghho & Son", sometimes referred to as "Excelsior Pottery." A. Donaghho was born in Washington County in 1829, and died in 1906. Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
