DescriptionPainting on a rectangular canvas with uneven edges. The canvas is coated with a light tan gesso, which "frames" the composition. The hues used in the composition include: orange, red, yellow, blue, dark blue, light blue, green, dark green, light green, yellow-green, purple, light purple, pink, medium brown, and white. The proper right edge is dominated by an abstract pattern of blue, dark blue, purple, green, and yellow, with a horizontal white line separating the dark section from a lighter one on the lower half of the pattern. The lower proper right corner is yellow, with orange overtop and a white wash. To the proper left of the corner, along the lower edge, is a section of yellow, yellow-green, light green, light blue, and white, which reaches the center of the edge. The proper left half of the composition is doninated by a large shape that looks like an abstract head facing proper right. The mass is orange, with yellow-orange, yellow, and red intermixed. Light purple is layered over the orange, primarily on the lower half of the shape. The proper left edge of the composition is a vertical line of light brown, outlined with dark blue and purple, which ends in the upper proper left corner, which is blue, light blue, dark blue, and dark green. A vertical line of yellow and yellow-green is between this section and the large orange "head." Text in the proper right section of the lower edge.Dimensions18.5039 x 23.1889 in. Historical NotesArtwork by the Pittsburgh artist Samuel Rosenberg. Artist and teacher Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) had a prolific career in Pittsburgh, leading him to be called the “Dean of Pittsburgh painters.” He is perhaps best-known for his scenes of the Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s. Rosenberg was a beloved presence in the Pittsburgh art world and influenced numerous artists through his teaching careers at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, Young Men & Women’s Hebrew Association, and Carnegie Tech.
