DescriptionAbstract oil painting on a rectangular canvas with uneven edges. Gessoed canvas "frames" the main painting, although a strip of ungessoed canvas makes up the proper left edge of the object. Largely made up of different shapes. The hues included are: cream, blue, dark blue, light blue, blue-gray, green, dark yellow-green (olive), teal, light yellow, dark yellow, light pink, medium pink, peach, light purple, and black. The upper edge and upper proper right corner is medium pink flanked by light pink. The upper proper left corner is dark yellow, with a section of olive green below on the proper left edge. The lower proper right corner is light yellow, while the lower proper left corner is the cream gesso. A black section runs along the center of the lower edge. A large vertical abstract shape in blue-gray makes up the center of the composition, with blue, light blue, dark blue, and light purple to the proper left and dark green, gree, and dark blue to the proper right. The conglomeration of these sections creates a four-sided polygon with the points directed toward the edges of the composition.Dimensions26.4173 x 22.4409 in. (67.1 x 57 cm)
Historical NotesArtwork by the Pittsburgh artist Samuel Rosenberg. Artist and teacher Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) had a prolific career in Pittsburgh, leading him to be called the “Dean of Pittsburgh painters.” He is perhaps best-known for his scenes of the Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s. Rosenberg was a beloved presence in the Pittsburgh art world and influenced numerous artists through his teaching careers at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, Young Men & Women’s Hebrew Association, and Carnegie Tech.
