DescriptionRectangular abstract collage with uneven edges. The base is tan cardstock, which frames the collage in the center of the object (but reaches the lower edge). The collage is made up of sections of colored paper, including: violet, light violet, red-violet, dark red-violet, pink, dark pink, red, dark green, green, light green, yellow-green, light yellow-green, light brown, and black. The base layer of the collage (over the tan cardstock) is black. The center of the design is a radial mass of pink, dark pink, red, violet, and light violet sections. The collage pattern radiates from this point, with a section of dark violet, light yellow-green, and dark green in the proper right upper corner, a section of dark red-violet, light green, and yellow-green in the proper left lower corner. A section of red-violet, flanked by dark green to the proper left and green to the proper right, makes up the proper left upper corner.Dimensions2.8346 x 4.0157 in. (7.2 x 10.2 cm)
Historical NotesArtwork by the Pittsburgh artist Samuel Rosenberg. Artist and teacher Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) had a prolific career in Pittsburgh, leading him to be called the “Dean of Pittsburgh painters.” He is perhaps best-known for his scenes of the Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s. Rosenberg was a beloved presence in the Pittsburgh art world and influenced numerous artists through his teaching careers at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, Young Men & Women’s Hebrew Association, and Carnegie Tech.
