DescriptionPainting on a rectangular canvas with uneven edges. The face of the object is covered with an off-white gesso, which "frames" the composition in the center. The composition is abstract, its hues include: yellow, white, pink, red, orange, green, blue, blue-green, light blue, light green, and black. There are four sections of yellow/orange/white paint; The largest runs roughly half the length of the proper right edge, with a smaller section in the lower proper right corner. The third section is on the upper edge toward the proper right corner. The fourth section runs one-third of the proper left edge and makes up the lower proper left corner. The lower half of the composition is largely warm colors, with red, orange, and pink the majority hues. Pink paint extends from the lower half of the composition up to the upper proper left corner. The upper half of the composition is largely cool colors, with blue, dark blue, light blue, blue-green, and green as the majority hues. A large dark blue section is to the proper right of the vertical halfway point, with the largest yellow/orange/white section to its proper right.Dimensions27.5196 x 14.0157 in. Artist and teacher Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) had a prolific career in Pittsburgh, leading him to be called the “Dean of Pittsburgh painters.” He is perhaps best-known for his scenes of the Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s. Rosenberg was a beloved presence in the Pittsburgh art world and influenced numerous artists through his teaching careers at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, Young Men & Women’s Hebrew Association, and Carnegie Tech.
