DescriptionOil painting on a rectangular canvas with uneven edges. The canvas is coated with a light tan gesso, "framing" the composition. The oil paint hues include: white, yellow, blue, light blue, dark blue, green, light green, orange, red, pink, light brown, red-brown, and light purple. The upper proper right corner is white (in a rectangualr shape) with yellow, light blue, and pink overtop. The upper proper left corner is white (in a triangular shape), with yellow, light blue, and light green overtop. The section between these corners, making up the uppermost one-fifth of the composition, is an abstract grouping of light blue, light green, orange, pink, and light purple. The center three-fifths of the proper right edge (reaching to the center) is an abstract pattern of light browns, light purple, yellow, orange, light blue, and light green. The center three-fifths of the proper left edge has a white section with light purple, light green, and pink, transitioning to light browns, dark blue, red, green, and orange (reaching toward the center). The "center line" between these two sections is a narrow oblong section of light blue with lpink, light purple, and yellow overtop. The lower one-fifth of the composition is an abstract pattern of green, dark blue, red-brown, light brown, yellow, and pink. overall, the composition resembles an abstract waterfall.Dimensions21.7322 x 17.2834 in. Artist and teacher Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) had a prolific career in Pittsburgh, leading him to be called the “Dean of Pittsburgh painters.” He is perhaps best-known for his scenes of the Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s. Rosenberg was a beloved presence in the Pittsburgh art world and influenced numerous artists through his teaching careers at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, Young Men & Women’s Hebrew Association, and Carnegie Tech.
