DescriptionPainting on a rectangular canvas with uneven edges. The canvas is coated with a cream/light tan gesso. The composition, in oil paints, is on the proper left three-quarters of the canvas, with the remaining proper right one-quarter unpainted gesso. The composition is comprised of red, orange, yellow, black, green, light brown, white, blue, light blue, dark blue, gray, and purple oil paint. The proper right two-thirds of the upper edge is a pattern of horizontal lines in blue, dark blue, light blue, light brown, purple, and white lines. The upper proper left corner is a base of blue (teal) with light blue, light brown, red, and purple overtop. There is a rectangular section in the lower proper left of the composition that is made up of a dark blue section, with a white section above it, covered by light blue, purple, red, and gray designs. Three-quarters of the proper right edge is a pattern of red, dark blue, black, orange, and white, which takes up the proper right half of the composition. Artist and teacher Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) had a prolific career in Pittsburgh, leading him to be called the “Dean of Pittsburgh painters.” He is perhaps best-known for his scenes of the Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s. Rosenberg was a beloved presence in the Pittsburgh art world and influenced numerous artists through his teaching careers at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, Young Men & Women’s Hebrew Association, and Carnegie Tech.
