DescriptionAbstract painted artwork with uneven edges. The base is a newspaper clipping with watercolor paints. The hues include: green, light green, blue, light blue, red-brown, dark orange, and orange. The lower edge shows text. The proper right corner of the painted area is light blue, with dots of blue paint overtop. The blue paint extends upward in a clockwise pattern, over a section of green and light green on the upper edge of the object. The proper left edge is painted orange and light green, with green and dark orange dots overtops. The center of the piece is a vertical section of blue, which is covered with blue, orange, and red-brown dots. The newspaper is folded to create the area for the painted composition. The reverse is a black and white image of a man's chin, neck, and shoulders, while the folded flap depicts a black and white image of a camel in rocky terrain.Dimensions2.6772 x 3.3071 in. Historical NotesArtwork by the Pittsburgh artist Samuel Rosenberg. Artist and teacher Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) had a prolific career in Pittsburgh, leading him to be called the “Dean of Pittsburgh painters.” He is perhaps best-known for his scenes of the Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s. Rosenberg was a beloved presence in the Pittsburgh art world and influenced numerous artists through his teaching careers at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, Young Men & Women’s Hebrew Association, and Carnegie Tech.
