DescriptionSalt-glazed stoneware storage jar, light grey color, three-gallon capacity; wide, ovoid body, narrowest at the base, and bulging outward at the waist in a vase shape; very short neck, simple undercut rim; wide mouth with two applied pulled handles; very thick glaze, with considerable orange peel pebbled texture; bright blue cobalt-slip stencilling has capacity and maker information; brown Albany-slip coated interior; upper rim and base are largely unglazed; diagonal series of heavy glaze drips on vessel, illustrating that this jar was fired in an inverted position in the kiln.Dimensions11.75 x 10 x 10.5 in. Historical NotesW.H. Elverson, John Sherwood, and C.A. Barker started their pottery in 1879. In 1881, Louis Barker joined the firm, though ware was still stencilled: "E.S. & B." In 1890, the company was sold to the Pittsburgh Clay Manufacturing Company Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
