DescriptionSalt-glazed stoneware jar, possibly a butter churn: tall, straight-sided, heavy weight; light buff-colored body clay has fired to a pale grey-buff color; two applied pulled handles at shoulder, with incised decorative line at start of neck; broad, tall upper rim, with internal shelf to fit a lid or, in the case of a churn, a dasher assembly (not intact); heavy dark-brown slip lining inside; pale cobalt-blue stencilled label provides maker information.Dimensions18.5 x 11.75 in. Historical NotesThe firm of E.S. & B. (W.H. Elverson, John Sherwood, and C.A. Barker) began in 1879. The factory was sold to the Pittsburgh Clay Manufacturing Company in 1890. Described as an eight-gallon churn by the donor, this may just be a storage jar, designed to fit a deep-seated lid; base is largely unglazed. Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
