DescriptionStoneware snuff jar with lid. Jar is ovoid shape, with very tall, slightly flared neck; light cream-color clay body, very smooth off-white Bristol slip glazing; vessel appears to have been press-moulded in two sections, and then wedded together at a point just below the shoulder; wide mouth has a deeply-recessed internal shelf, into which fits lid. Lid is press-moulded round, flat lid, glazed to match the jar, with recessed button-style lift handle at center.Dimensions6.25 x 4 in. (15.9 x 10.2 cm)

Historical NotesGeorge Weyman & Sons, listed as "Manufacturers and Dealers in Tobacco, Snuff, Segars" in city directory, located on Smithfield Street in downtown Pittsburgh 1860 to 1882. In 1883, the firm, now known as "Weyman & Bro." was located on Duquesne Way; this firm persisted into the 20th century, and eventually developed the "Copenhagen" snuff brand (now a product of U.S. Tobacco Company).
