DescriptionSalt-glazed stoneware storage jar, probably used to hold tobacco or snuff; light gray color, smooth-sided cylindrical form, tapering inward slightly at the neck; inside of rim has a concave flared shelf, apparently to fit a tapered sealing lid; interior of vessel has a dark-brown Albany-slip glaze; face of jar is stencilled with maker information; most of the jar's base is unglazed.Dimensions9.25 x 6 in. Historical NotesGeorge Weyman & Sons, listed as "Manufacturers and Dealers in Tobacco, Snuff, Segars" in city directory, located on Smithfield Street in downtown Pittsburgh 1860 to 1882. In 1883, the firm, now known as "Weyman & Bro." was located on Duquesne Way; this firm persisted into the 20th century, and eventually developed the "Copenhagen" snuff brand (now a product of U.S. Tobacco Company). Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
