DescriptionSmall, approximately one gallon salt-glazed stoneware whiskey or vinegar jug: brownish-gray color, with cobalt stencilling, providing maker information with leaf swags; short, wide neck with incised line; single attached loop handle at shoulder; a wooden (oak) bung or plug has been inserted into the mouth of this jug, but seems to be too small to have been original.Dimensions12 x 7 in. (30.5 x 17.8 cm)
MarksCobalt stencilling, which reads: "John P. Eberhart / New Geneva Pa".
Historical NotesJohn Eberhart took over L.B. Dilliner's stoneware pottery in New Geneva in 1880, and operated the works into the 1890s. Whiskey jugs were one of the mainstays of production in the waning days of the Southwestern Pennsylvania potteries.
