DescriptionSalt-glazed stoneware storage jar or crock: early appearance, semi-ovoid shape, narrow at base, bulging at waist, with wide mouth and wide, overhanging rim; incised decorative line at shoulder; smooth, light-grey color, with hand-brushed cobalt-slip decoration, featuring a horizontal fern-and-fuschia design, above an underlined cursive numeral; brown Albany slip coated interior.Dimensions9.875 x 9.5 in. Historical NotesShape, light color, and hand-brushed decoration all suggest relatively early manufacture. The fern-and-fuschia design was popular with Greensboro, Pennsylvania potters in the 1850s and 1860s.
