Historical NotesAwarded to Mary Altman, who along with her husband raced boats locally. Jimmy and Mary Altman of New Kensington took up outboard boating in 1927, after several years of dirt track auto racing. According to Jimmy, boat racing was “more fun and a lot safer than racing the old fronty Fords.” Their daughter, Ethel, joined in at age 14 and began winning races with her Class M (midget) hydroplane. She won the U.S. National Championship in 1946 and 1948.Label TextIn a sport dominated by men, Mary Altman proved that women could compete and win. The Mid Eastern Outboard Association awarded her this trophy for being Class M high point champion.
