DescriptionGAR badge in two sections: top Liberty Bell section and bottom inverted star section.
Top section of badge. Topped with an eagle with its wings outstretched, with two crossed cannons and swords, and a shield with the date. Below this motif is a bar in the shape of a bell holder. At the top of the bar are the words identifying the object within a smaller bar. Under this, in the center, is the event name. The second section of the medal is in the shape of the Liberty Bell. At the top of the bell is the image of the meeting house in Philadelphia. At the bottom, the city name written along the edge. There is a space at the center of the bell where the bottom section would be connected The reverse side of the medal is plain all but for the maker's mark and the pin.
Brass upside down star with seal of the Grand Army of the Republic in the center. The seal shows the image of two soldiers shaking hands in front of a Native American figure, with a woman and child underneath their hands. At the top of the bell bar are the words "OFFICIAL" AND "SOUVENIR" within a smaller bar.
Under this, in the center, is the inscription "33RD"; the word "NATIONAL" flanks the number on its left, and "ENCAMPMENT" on its right.
At the bottom of the bell, the word "PHILADELPHIA" is written along the edge.

The reverse side of the medal has text "SCHWAA...BS. CO / MILWAUKEE"
Historical NotesFrom the 33rd National Encampment in Philadelphia, PA. Part of a collection relating to the Pennsylvania Grand Army of the Republic and John Remley who served in the Civil War and was active in the leadership of the GAR. The collection documents the military career of a Civil War soldier from the Western Pennsylvania region.
