DescriptionStoneware whiskey jug, early appearance, reddish-tan to grey mottled body; bulbous shape, broadens toward the shoulder; tall straight, neck, with two embossed rings; large pulled handle applied to one side of the vessel; elaborate cursive numeral impressed near top; cobalt-blue stencilled label has maker information; hand-applied brush decoration, featuring a fern and fuschia design, wavy lines, and a cursine numeral with underline.Dimensions14.25 x 8 x 8 in. MarksElaborate cursive "2" impressed near top.

Cobalt-blue stencilled label reads: "FOELL & ALT / EAST BIRMINGHAM / PA." and a cursine numeral "2" with underline.
Historical NotesJohn Foell and Nicholas Alt started their pottery at 26th and Sarah Streets in East Birmingham in 1857. In 1872, East Birmingham became part of the City of Pittsburgh (South Side). In 1885, John Foell left the business, and his son entered, forming "Alt & Son". In the early 1890', H.P. Erbe bought into the firm, becoming "Alt & Erbe". Part of a collection of stoneware from local manufacturers in the Western Pennsylvania region.
