DescriptionNeedlepoint sampler embroidered on linen, multicolored thread. Across the top (right to left): blue, white, green, and yellow bowl with what appears to be flowers, blue and green bird in a plant with green branches, and white and red flowers and a yellow bowl with a large green plant with light green, red and white circles, above the bowl is text in brown, text in white, and below the bowl is text in brown. Below that is a wavy dark green line with white and red circles alternating above and below the line. Beneath that is a religious quote in brown thread. Below that is a solid brown line, underneath that is name of maker and date. Below that in green are three letters. Underneath that are several green, blue, red, and white plants. Below that in the bottom left corner is a large green, red, white, and yellow plant on blue steps, below that is text in brown. Beside that is a blue house with a red roof and two chimneys with a red bird on top. In the bottom right hand corner is a small green tree beside a much larger green tree with red and brown circles, beside that is a small green and white tree. Underneath this is a solid green line, below that is text in brown. Around the edge is a border of green crescents with brown, white and light green circles in the middle.Dimensions16.5 x 22.25 in. Historical NotesSampler made by Jane Glenn in 1827. Glenn was born in 1812 on the family homestead on Chartiers Creek in what is now Glenndale in Carnegie. Her parents came to the region from Cumberland County and her father William Glenn fought in the war of 1812. Her grandfather James Glen fought in the Revolutionary War and resided in Lancaster County. The family was very involved in Mt. Lebanon Presbyterian Church. Jane married Robert Bigham on October 24, 1832. For a period of their marriage they operated a flour mill in Scott Township but they sold the mill in 1854 and returned to Carnegie. They had one son, William Glenn Bigham.
