DescriptionCeramic coffee cup and matching saucer in CAN 94 pattern.
White coffee cup with gold handle. Around the outer rim is a patter of white floral motifs outlined in gold on a blue background and two identical images of a red, yellow, green, and blue bird surrounded by pink, red, and yellow flowers and green leaves on opposite sides of the cup. Above this imagery is a gold line with white dots. Below this imagery is a gold pattern. Circling the inside of the coffee cup near the rim is a gold line. The base of the coffee cup is encircled by a gold line.
White saucer. Around the outer rim is a patter of white floral motifs outlined in gold on a blue background and three equally spaced identical images of a red, yellow, green, and blue bird surrounded by pink, red, and yellow flowers and green leaves. Above this imagery is a gold line with white dots. Below this imagery is a gold pattern. In the center of the underside of the saucer is a stamped green Maker's Mark reading "CANONSBURG" encircling "CHINA".
Historical NotesPart of a collection of Canonsburg pottery and W. S. George pottery. Canonsburg China Company was founded in 1900 to take advantage of natural resources in Canonsburg. A few years later the name changed to Canonsburg Pottery. At about the same time, board member W. S. George split away from the company to found W.S. George Pottery Company. It operated until the 1960s before changing ownership through a series of mergers and finally closing. Canonsburg Pottery continued operation until 1977 before regulations and a declining economy resulted in closure. These items expand the History Center’s existing glass collection while also demonstrating the impact of economic growth and decline in Western Pennsylvanian communities.
