DescriptionSlip-cast earthenware serving pitcher: very broad, wide, squat, modern design, with sweeping, flowing, lines; integral angular D-shape handle, round arrowhead pouring spout; pale yellow-buff white body clay, hand decorated with brushed-on design in red, green, brown, blue, yellow, of an apple surrounded by leaves, all under a glossy, clear glaze; labelled with maker information on the base.Dimensions7.5 x 11 x 8 in. Historical NotesBernard Purinton was issued a number of patents for innovative techniques involving slip-casting of pottery vessels, and also a "gang mold" process. The signature pieces produced a rather unique blend of unusual modern shapes, combined with traditional-looking hand-painted decoration. The company was started in 1936, in Wellsville, Ohio, relocating to Shippenville, Pennsylvania, in 1941. A second factory opened in Tionesta a few years later; the business was finally liquidated in 1959.
