DescriptionBlack leather shako cap. Oval cylindrical cap with upturned brim. Brass insignia mounted on front with eagle, horn, branches, and arrows; black, gold, and red painted metal rosette mounted above. Front of crown has off-white pom with gold metal hemispherical base. Black metal button on proper right side at center just under crown; button missing from proper left side. Underside of brim is green leather and has raised letters at left, center, and right. Black text inside cap at back is difficult to read, but appears to read "G F / 5".
Historical NotesInfantry shako hat. The shakos were made in France and given to several Civil War regiments as a prize for their drill proficiency, including the 62nd of Pittsburgh. Part of a collection related and passed down through the Eichleay family.
