Historical NotesPart of a Vietnam War collection of John J. Rush. John Rush was born in Allegheny General Hospital in 1946 and grew up in Ross Township until the age of 7, when his parents moved to Brighton Heights. He attended the Connelly Votech School for plumbing, graduating in 1964. After spending some time delivering dog food, he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965 and spent from July 1966 to July 1967 in the 4th Infantry Division (called Ivy Leaf division), 2nd Brigade in Vietnam as a SP4. In November 1967 he was transferred to USAR Control Group in St. Louis until his discharge in 1971. In 1992, he applied for a Purple Heart for injuries he sustained in Vietnam and received the award (he fractured three vertebrae while exiting a helicopter that was under fire when he had to drop twenty feet with his pack on). After Vietnam he worked for Continental Baking in Pittsburgh for 23 years, then retired from Celone Bread Company at the age of 55. He died in 2016 from Soft Tissue Sarcoma of the nerve sheath caused from exposure to Agent Orange while in Vietnam.
