DescriptionRectangular quilt, off-white cotton top has red and blue/gray/green appliqued variation of Ohio Beauty pattern and elaborate trapunto stitching. Background quilting is in closely spaced diamond pattern (about 11-13 stitches per inch) and stippling. Trapunto designs feature circular wreaths and leaf or feather sprays. Border has appliqued flower and vine pattern and off-white cotton edge binding with red cording in top seam. (262.9 x 247.7 x 0.6 cm)Historical NotesThe maker of the quilt, Mrs. Mary (Speer) Hess lived about the year 1845 or sometime later at Uniontown, PA. The quilt may have been made there. It was given to Olive Speer in 1880 and subsequently donated to the Carnegie and transferred to HSWP in 1994-1995.
