DescriptionOff-white loosely woven linen sampler attached to a backer board. Silk(?) embroidery in shades of blue, white, green, and brown. Border of vines and flowers. House in center with small dog at right surrounded by branches, disproportionately large basket of flowers with birds atop branches and one willow tree to the left. Verse at top in brown embroidery. Sampler is mounted on a padded backer. Mounted sampler is framed in a rectangular dark brown wooden frame with gilded interior trim. Frame is a shadowbox with white linen sides. Plastic glazing. DimensionsHeight x Length: 15.75 x 19.12 in. (40 x 48.6 cm)

InscriptionsVerse embroidered across the top: "The Rose has been Wash'd Just Wash'd in a shower / Which Sarah to Nancy convey'd / The Plentiful moisture encumber'd the flower / And it weig'd down its beautiful head. / sarah ann Girty Aged, 11 Years Feb 21, 1824".

MarksFrame's backing paper has two labels in the bottom proper left corner:
Top label has text including "FRAMED WITH / Optium / Acrylic Glazing / A TRU VUE PRODUCT...";
Bottom label has text including "4/2025 / Concept Art / Gallery..."
Historical NotesThe sampler was made by Sarah Ann Girty (Burns) in 1824. She lived on Evergreen Avenue in Millvale and was a direct descendent of Simon Girty. It was donated to the Carnegie Museum by Miss Sherrie Sample, Millvale, PA. Transferred to Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania in 1994.
